Weatherfield has been home to a the odd killer or two over the years. And for those Coronation Street residents who have managed to avoid Metrolink trams, Frescho freezers or car crashes in Malaga, there’s usually a Pat Phelan waiting around the corner to keep them on their toes.

In all, there are 23 known killers to have walked the famous cobbles. The most memorable include Phelan, Stephen Reid, Richard Hillman and John Stape – who have been responsible for just some of more than 30 confirmed murders in the ITV soap since it began back in 1960.

The first of those was Steve Tanner in 1968. His army buddy, Joe Donelli, pushed him down a flight of stairs due to a feud over a debt. He wouldn’t be exposed for the crime until two years later, in 1970.

Joe also went on to threaten Stan Ogden with a handgun. Not intending to kill him, he used him as a hostage to buy him some time before taking his own life shortly after.
